How to Save Money When Shopping for Electronic Devices

CB-sponsored-post-white-script-600I’m not really a cheap person. I mean, I did get rid of cable to save nearly $80 a month…..and I shop a ton of thrift stores in order to decorate my house….but I do invest a lot of money into electronic devices–cell phones, tablets, and my huge 27-inch desktop computer (yes, 27-inch!).  I drop some serious cash on my “toys.” But just because I love electronics doesn’t mean I want to overpay for them.

This is where Best Buy comes in. And you’re not going to believe what happened.

The Biggest Showroom

First, let me tell you: most of the electronics I have bought, I first went to Best Buy to try them out. I used Best Buy as my testing ground when I wanted to get my hands on a “toy” to play around before buying, because that’s just not possible when shopping online. Best Buy is the best place to test out electronics because they have the largest showroom of all the latest gadgets. (They have good deals on free gift cards, too, when you buy phones and activate them in-house). What’s even better is that they have a huge selection of mobile phone accessories there, too.  I just upgrade my iPhone to a 5s, and it’s great knowing that when I need anything for my mobile phone, I can go to Best Buy to check it out (in fact, I need a new iPhone case). It’s so hard to decide online how a cell phone case is going to fit in your hand or in your pocket, you know? At least at Best Buy you can find the cases to try each one out first, along with tons of other mobile phone accessories.

When shopping online, you’re relying solely on faith and customer feedback (which can sometimes be hit or miss).

But after testing them out in the showroom, guess what I’d usually do?

I’d go home, and make the purchase online.

Why?

Because I felt I could get a better deal online, even if just a few dollars.

It’s probably true that most people shop for electronics this way to save money. We’re so afraid of paying more for something that we can get cheaper elsewhere, even if it’s $5.00.

Do you shop this way sometimes, too?

The Best Buy Low Price Guarantee

But did you know that Best Buy has a Low Price Guarantee? I’m talking “if-you-find-it-cheaper-elsewhere-we’ll-honor-that-price” kind of deal. I had no idea they price-matched like this. Did you?

So on a recent trip to Best Buy for this #CollectiveBias shop, to check out mobile phone accessories for a new bluetooth for hubby (an early Valentine’s Day present), I wanted to test out this Low Price Guarantee.

I knew that I wanted to spend no more than $50 or $60, and this Blue Shirt guy helped me find the bluetooths (or would that be “blueteeth”? HA!) in the Mobile section.  There were several selections of bluetooth devices, all in different prices points (some for each person with a different budget).

I decided on this one, for $59.99.

Then I decided to check out what Amazon.com listed as the price for the bluetooth. It was $39.61. Same product, I was sure of it.

Now, what I normally would have done at that point, was put it back and say, “Alright, I’ll order that online when I get home.”

But Best Buy was even advertising the Low Price Guarantee on these the numerous LCD monitors throughout the store (and wouldn’t you know I tried to capture a shot of it, but I kept missing it in the rolling slide show, LOL).  I couldn’t wait to see if they would, in fact, honor the lower price. I don’t think I have ever price-matched quite like this before!

So What Did I Pay?

I pulled out my iPhone, showed the cashier the lower price from Amazon.com, and wouldn’t you know that he honored the price?!?! I paid the $39.61 (not including tax). I did a little internal happy dance, and couldn’t wait to share what happened here on the blog!

Just like that, I saved $20.38 thanks to the Low Price Guarantee at Best Buy.

But it also got me thinking– how many people walked into Best Buy just to do research and play with the toys, only to have gone home and waited for a week to get their electronics in the mail, all because they didn’t know about the Low Price Guarantee, or didn’t bother to ask about it? (Oh, how I hate eagerly waiting for the mail delivery guy to come, only to see that the stupid package must be picked up at the facility because I’ve missed both delivery attempts! Grrrr…)

Or, even worse, how many people overpaid because they didn’t know about the Low Price Guarantee?

Probably countless.

At least, now that you’re reading this, you won’t be one of them anymore… now will you? 🙂

How Does the Low Price Guarantee Work?

Best Buy (#OneBuyForAll) has an amazing selection of smartphones, accessories, and it really is the best place to go to when you want to touch, feel, and play with all things tech before you purchase. But you’ve got to do your research before you walk into the store if you want to save some cash in the event something is priced lower online.

According to their website, Best Buy will honor the lower price if you find a cheaper deal sold and shipped from a designated major online retailer (like Amazon.com, BHphotovidoe.com, hhgregg.com, etc. See their policy for list of qualifying retailers).

Products online should have the “Low Price Guarantee” above the price block on BestBuy.com.

Then you can call up Best Buy at 1-888-BEST-BUY and direct the representative to the website with the lower price, or print the page showing the lower price. I showed my cell phone to the cashier to get the low price guarantee, which was acceptable, too.

And it was that easy!

So Now What?

We’re not all going to stop shopping online. It’s easy and convenient! But I also know we’re not going to stop going to Best Buy to test things out before we purchase. We want to be sure we’re buying quality products before we buy, so testing it out is crucial (and yes, fun!). Now, however, we can be sure we’re getting the best price when we go to Best Buy. And we can buy immediately! (Can you say instant gratification??). Just make sure you do your research before you go, and don’t be afraid to ask for the lower price! You’re entitled to it.

  1. I didn’t know about this guarantee, but I’m glad I do now, Serena! You’re right in that I won’t stop shopping online….but there ARE instances when I cannot wait a few days for my purchase to show up on my doorstep – this sure would come in handy!

Hey Travis! Sorry for the late reply! And thanks SO MUCH for linking back to me via your LYLAB weekly post 😉 Yeah, I had no idea about their guarantee, either! I even have started to ask for the guarantee at places like Home Depot, too! LOL Come to find out, they won’t price match the way Best Buy will for Amazon prices, (but they will price match with stores like Lowes or something). Hey, it’s worth a shot! Thanks so much for commenting!!

I Love it! “Blueteeth”! HAHA! I’m not sure what you’d call it either! SO funny. I love Best Buy’s Low Price Guarantee because I can get anything I need there at the very lowest price and make sure I’m getting what I want. I love ordering online, but sometimes you have no idea what you’re getting. They also have a fantastic selection of mobile phone accessories! It’s insanity! #client

    • Serena says:

Yes, the mobile phone accessories were awesome! I loved that they had all the cases there for my iPhone 5. My case just broke, so now I’m on the hunt for a new case, too! Off to Best Buy!!!

  3. Glad you’re able to find help at Best Buy; the last two times I’ve gone in there, folks were doing busy work but not helping customers. I was ready to drop serious money on a laptop and on a mobile phone IF I could have found help. Yes, I did ask at the customer service desk and she la de dawed around and never sent someone to help me. I’ve sent corporate a letter, it’ll be interesting if they respond.

    • Serena says:

Hey Sandra! I’m sorry for just responding!! Whatever happened with Best Buy and contacting corporate? I hate when a store gives poor customer service!!!!
